Fall 2022 |
When I come to create a project, I am inspired by artists, media, songs, and world events. This fuels my process towards focusing on experimentation with mediums, techniques, and themes. Usually, my works are made to pique my interest and allow me to feel further inspired to create more. Until now, my work has been realistic for the most part. Yet, I have found that I also have a passion for 3D media and for creating abstract figures.
My 2D Design and drawing classes teach methods of experimentation in 2D compositions. 3D design teaches form and focal points within a 3D object. Going beyond my preference for drawing, 3D design has felt therapeutic, allowing me to be spontaneous and trust my intuition. Materials such as paper, tape, hot glue, and cardboard are incorporated in the 3D Design. Although not new to me, they were used in such a way that made them interesting. In 2D design and drawing, I used materials such as rubber cement, India ink, and a quill pen. These mediums did not inspire me, but they did encourage me to branch out to other forms of material. In my exploration, I discovered some of my strengths and weaknesses. I found that I am heavy-handed and sloppy with more delicate materials such as ink. In contrast, I am more successful with malleable materials such as wire. An example of this was a successful sculpture I made using cardboard and hot glue.
My passion lies within my drawing but continuing my work in 3D design, would help me to create interesting compositions in my future pieces.

Spring 2023
Before entering the Foundation's program, my skill felt very limited to only one medium. I was very unfamiliar with painting, sculpture, etc. I had prior experience with them in the past, however, I believe that my skill level was just not up to par for me to feel like I had any talent in the medium. This stopped me from fully experimenting with new mediums and new methods. I was very stuck in my ways and it was blocking my creativity. For my Foundation’s program, I learned about juxtaposition, line and plane, and balance. Each of these factors greatly contributed to my development. For each of my projects, I had to focus on or combine concepts that I was already familiar with or concepts that I was unfamiliar with. For example, Balance directly focuses on balance, hence the name, while also incorporating juxtaposition between the figures and the fish. In the process of creation, I have noticed that much of my inspiration and motivation comes from personal healing or topics that I am passionate about. For example, Second Grade Amendment was inspired by all of the victims impacted by school violence and school shootings. Another example of this would be in A Dangerous Environment, greatly inspired by Michelle "Liv" Livek Garner’s Fin series. In the ceramics program, I felt most challenged and inadequate compared to my peers. I had trouble working with the medium, finding how uncontrollable and fragile it was. I also felt this struggle in Print Making. I have found that I have an equal fondness for both 2D and 3D, however, I favor painting, drawing, and sculpture. Contrary to how I felt about these mediums at the beginning of Foundations, the concepts and techniques explored left a lasting impact on me. In the future, I want to continue to explore jewelry-making as well as photography more, while still incorporating elements of the units I enjoyed. After the conclusion of the Foundations classes, I felt the need to explore more while still scaffolding off what I had already learned.
